Teaching and Learning Day - 2017

This year's keynote presentation is on "How do you talk about your teaching?" by Dr Kate Thomson, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Sydney.

She is a lecturer and early career researcher. Her research centres on professional learning, with a focus on collaborative and informal learning. Her PhD was on informal conversations about teaching and she has experience in facilitating student and staff learning through conversations, tailored online resources, and systems of peer support.

Dr Thomson will also be conducting a workshop with Dr Robert Kennelly on the day and the topic is on "Talking About Teaching and Learning – TATALing the HERDSA way".

Australian university academics are frequently asked to speak about their philosophy of teaching and to demonstrate their understanding of the relationship between them, their students, their discipline, and the curriculum they are teaching. In this workshop, Kate Thomson and Robert Kennelly will introduce participants to the HERDSA TATAL workshops, now an integral part of the application for HERDSA Fellowship. Participants will discuss theoretical frameworks by Schönwetter and Chism, and review examples of statements of teaching philosophy that have been used in applications for promotion and teaching awards and incorporated in teaching portfolios as part of the HERDSA Fellowship application process.
